Almost all people suppose that they can find out their own breathing frequency for their automatic breath by plainly counting it. Meanwhile, one's automatic breath pattern significantly changes, as soon as we pay attention to our breath. Breath will be slower and deeper, up to 2-3 times. What are the other alternatives? You can ask friends or relatives to count the number of your inhale during a minute when you are unaware about your breathing movements. You may also record your respiratory process using sensitive microphones fixed near your nose. This could be done at night or when you are busy with some other activities.nnPresent medical textbooks suggest that normal breathing frequency for adults is 12 breaths per minute at rest. Textbooks, published about one hundred ago, often provide even smaller values (e.g., 8-10 breaths per minute). However, most modern adults breathe much faster (about 15-20 breaths in 1 min). Hyperventilation DIMINISHES oxygen content in cells due to CO2-induced constriction of blood vessels (vasoconstriction) and the suppressed Bohr effect. As a result, the less we breathe, the more oxygen our bodies get. nnHowever, cells oxygenation can be defined using a straightforward stress-free breath-holding test. Sit and rest for around five min and try to breathe normally. Relax completely and pinch your nose after your average exhalation. Then count your stress-free breath-holding time in s, while using a clock or watch. Do the test only until initial stress or discomfort, or desire to breathe. You should not gasp for air after the test.nnNormal tissues oxygenation is 40 seconds. It corresponds to normal breathing pattern with about 6 liters of air in 1 min for ventilation rate. Since modern people breathe about two times more air than the medical norm (this finding has been confirmed by tens of professional medical studies), their oxygen content in the body is about 2 times less (around 20-25 s). Ideal oxygenation of the body is about 3 minutes. The ideal breathing frequency is only about three breaths per min, and, according to the Buteyko Table of Health Zones, it provides people with maximum possible tissue oxygen content. nnOne can retrain their breathing pattern using various respiratory retraining method exercises. Hatha Yoga is the one of the oldest breathing retraining systems and ancient manuscripts, like "Shiva Samhita", "Yoga Sutra of Panjali", "Hatha Yoga Pradipika", all teach us about "limiting", "restraining", "restricting", "slowing" the breath. However, most leading yoga teachers, their books and websites promote 2 fantasies that, first, CO2 is a poisonous gas and, second, deep involuntary breathing pattern increases body oxygenation. nnThe most known medical respiratory retraining therapy is the Buteyko breathing method. It uses the same breath-holding time test as the main indicator of one's health. The Buteyko method comprises 2 parts: special breathing exercises for slowing down one's breath and healthy lifestyle factors, which naturally make breathing lighter. Some of them are: n- exercise with strictly nasal breathing (in and out; it helps us to achieve more CO2 and nitric oxide)n- Forgiveness and silent prayer; relaxation and meditation exercises; npeace-making, self-discipline, composure, perseverance, calmness, good will, nrealism, commitment, acceptance, responsibility.n- Good posture (straight spine 24-7)n- More time outdoors (in particular, for the elderly)n- Eating, only when one is really hungry, and stopping in timen- Going to bed for sleep, only when a person really sleepy, and getting out of bed after waking up in the morning; sleeping on hard bedsn- Uncooked vegetarian eating habits (only if very properly chewed).nnSince oxygenation of tissues is so important for good health, it is not a surprise that restoration of normal breathing numbers results in no symptoms and no medication for many chronic diseases. This has been proven by many medical trials of the Buteyko method in Russia, Ukraine and several western countries.
